Mutual Strike

Last session we practiced some techniques from the Yokomen Uchi attack (hook or chop into the side of the face). Sensei refers to this as mutual strike since the counter to the attack is to step off the line of attack and do a similar yokomen strike to the attacker. You also bring up the other arm to halt the other's blow, so you both end up with one arm striking and the other arm blocking.

It should be possible to avoid the blow at the point it is most powerful, but still use the energy (and the uke's out-of-balance condition) to sweep his arm over to do ikkyo, nikkyo, sankyo, yonkyo, kaetennage, or sweep the arm through for shihonage. Needs a lot more practice, but definitely a dynamic and satisfying session.
